Statistics Day 2016

“Statistics Day” is celebrated every year on 29th June to mark the birth anniversary of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the Father of Indian Statistics, in recognition of his valuable contribution in the fields of statistics and economic planning.

The objective of this Day is to create public awareness, especially among the younger generation about the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. Every year one particular theme of current national importance is selected for intensive and focused efforts are made throughout the year to fill the data gaps, improve timeliness and quality of data related to it. The 10th Statistics Day 2016 was celebrated all over India on the theme ‘Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare’ by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
