Gautam Kaul Won Prestigious Post In Federations’ Executive Committee Elections

India has been elected new President of Asian Tug of War Federation. India’s Gautam Kaul won the prestigious post in the Federations’ Executive Committee elections held in Kathmandu, Nepal. 
This is the first time when India has been elected to lead the organisation. The post of Secretary-General has also gone to India, while Nepal has got Treasurer’s post. Pakistan and Cambodia have won posts of Vice Presidents. The tenure of newly elected office bearers will be for 3 years.

Shashank Manohar to serve 2nd term as ICC chairman


Former BCCI President Shashank Manohar will serve a second two-year term as the independent chairman of the International Cricket Council after he was elected unopposed by the governing body’s Board. 

Mr. Manohar became the first independent ICC Chairman in 2016. According to the election process, ICC Directors were each allowed to nominate one candidate, who had to be either a present or a past ICC Director.

Shekhar Kapur to head the jury for 65th National Film Awards

Veteran director Shekhar Kapur has been appointed the chairman of the central panel of the 65th National Film Awards. The central panel comprises a chairperson and 10 other members, including five regional chairpersons who head the respective regional panels.

Film writer Imtiaz Hussain, known for his works in films like Astitva (2000) and Parinda (1989) will be the regional chairperson of South I panel. Mehboob, who penned the lyrics for the Hindi (dubbed) version of 1995 Tamil romantic drama Bombay, has been appointed as the regional chairperson of South II panel.

Harsh Vardhan gets additional charge of Environment Ministry


Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan was given additional charge of the Environment Ministry following the death of Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave.

The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee as advised by the Prime Minister has directed that Dr. Harsh Vardhan should be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in addition to his existing portfolios.

Emmanuel Macron elected as President of France


Pro-European centrist leader Emmanuel Macron has been elected as President of France. 39-year-old former investment banker, who has never held elected office, becomes the youngest President and occupant of the Élysée Palace (official residence of the President of France).

Mr. Macron will also become the first President from outside the two traditional main parties since the modern republic’s foundation in 1958. The French Interior Ministry said with 93 percent of the votes counted, Mr. Macron had about 19.3 million votes, while Ms. Marine Le Pen secured about 10.4 million was the close rival in elections.

    UN chief Guterres names Achim Steiner as new administrator of UNDP


    United Nation (UN) chief Antonio Guterres has named a German Achim Steiner, as the new administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

    Headquartered in New York City, the UNDP seeks to reduce poverty, improve social development and encourage women’s empowerment. Achim Steiner belongs to Germany who previously served at the UN Environment Programme and headed the UN office in Kenya.

    Former Supreme Court judge Shiva Kirti Singh to head TDSAT


    The government has appointed retired Supreme Court judge Shiva Kirti Singh as the next chairman of the Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) after replacing of  Justice Aftab Alam who was retired in June 2016.

    The appointment is for a period of three years from the date of assumption of office. As per rules, the head of the dispute resolution agency for the telecom industry must be a person, who has been a Supreme Court judge, or the chief justice of a high court. 

    Justice Singh had served as the chief justice of Allahabad High Court before he became a judge in the apex court.

    Government swaps chief executives of IDBI Bank, Indian Bank


    The Centre has swapped the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of state-owned Indian Bank and IDBI Bank.

    HSBC breaks with tradition, names AIA boss Tucker as Chairman

    HSBC Holdings Plc , Europe’s biggest bank, tapped an outsider for its top job on Monday, appointing insurance veteran and AIA Group boss Mark Tucker as chairman to replace Douglas Flint, who plans to step down in 2017.


    A one-time professional footballer, who has held several leadership jobs, including running Britain’s Prudential, Tucker will take over as group chairman designate from September 1 and as non-executive group chairman on October 1. Flint and Gulliver’s departure from HSBC after six years will end one of the longest-serving management partnerships at a major global bank.

    Pakistan diplomat Sial assumes office as new Sec Gen of SAARC


    South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has named Amjad Hussain B Sial, as secretary general with immediate effect from March 1, 2017.

    Mr.Sial from Pakistan succeeded Nepal’s Arjun Bahadur Thapa as the SAARC secretary general who was appointed the Secretary-General in 2014. 

    Prior to this appointment, he was Special Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, from Pakistan Foreign Service with over 33 years of career in the diplomatic field.
