Indian Boxer Mary Kom Signed As Brand Ambassador By BSNL

State-run telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) roped in Indian boxer MC Mary Kom as its brand ambassador for two years. BSNL will run television commercials, print advertisements and tariff plan endorsement with Kom.

Dr Poonam Singh Nominated For 2nd Term As Regional Director WHO South-East Asia

India retained the top WHO position in South-East Asia Region with Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh unanimously re-elected as Regional Director for another five-year term beginning February 2019. The elections were held at the ongoing regional committee meeting of WHO South-East Asia. 
Dr Singh is the first woman to have been elected to the position of Regional Director for WHO South-East Asia Region after an illustrious career in the Indian civil service, World Bank and WHO.

Arif Alvi Elected Pakistan’s New President

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Arif-ur-Rehman Alvi was elected as the 13th President of Pakistan, the result data from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) confirmed. The elections were held simultaneously at the Parliament House and the four provincial assemblies, with 27 of the total votes cast being annulled. 
A total of 430 votes were cast in the National Assembly and the Senate, with Alvi bagging 212 of them. President-elect Alvi will succeed outgoing President Mamnoon Hussain and assume office on September 9.

Mark Read Appointed WPP CEO In Place of Martin Sorrell

WPP Plc, the world’s largest communication services group, announced the appointment of Mark Read as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Director (ED) to the company’s board with immediate effect. 
He takes over the position from Martin Sorrell, who resigned from WPP, 33 years after founding the company, following allegations of personal misconduct and misuse of company assets.

Binoy Kumar Assumes Charge of Secretary in Steel Ministry

Binoy Kumar has taken over as Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India. He had been posted as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry. Prior to this, Binoy Kumar held the post of Special Secretary, Logistics, in the Department of Commerce. 
He also held the post of Director General (Supplies & Disposals), where he developed the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) as a one-stop online public procurement platform, in line with the digital initiatives of the Government of India.

Balesh Sharma Appointed Vodafone Idea’s 1st CEO

Balesh Sharma takes over as Vodafone Idea’s first CEO. He was the Chief Operating Officer of Vodafone India and a member of its executive committee. 
Sharma holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and MBA (Marketing and Finance) from the University of Rajasthan. He has previously served as the CEO of Vodafone Czech Republic and the CEO of Vodafone Malta.

Satya S Tripathi Appointed Assistant Secretary-General & Head of New York Office of UNEP

Veteran Indian development economist Satya S Tripathi has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) by UN Chief Antonio Guterres. He will replace Elliott Harris. 
Tripathi has worked for the United Nations since 1998 in Europe, Asia and Africa on strategic assignments in sustainable development, human rights, democratic governance and legal affairs.

G. Satheesh Reddy Appointed New DRDO Chairman

The Centre appointed renowned scientist, Dr G Satheesh Reddy, as Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Secretary in Department of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D). 
The topmost post of the DRDO was lying vacant when the then chief Dr S Christopher stepped down. Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra was then given additional charge of the organisation.

U K Varma Appointed Assocham Secretary General

Industry chamber Assocham appointed former bureaucrat Uday Kumar Varma as its new Secretary General. He succeeds DS Rawat who held the position for nearly 14 years.
Varma retired from the position of Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India in 2013, and has extensive administrative experience at the highest levels of administration both in the state government (of Madhya Pradesh) and central government.

NGT Appoints Justice S J Vazifdar As Chairman Of Panel To Decide Vedanta’s Plea

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has appointed former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice S J Vazifdar as head of a three-member committee to decide mining company Vedanta’s plea challenging closure of its Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin. 
A bench headed by chairperson A K Goel had stated a credible mechanism, through which rival contentions can be balanced and final view taken, has to be evolved. It appointed Vazifdar as the head of the committee.
