Government Constitutes New Science And Technology Council To Advise PM

The Union Government has constituted a 21-member science and technology council to advise Prime Minister Narendra Modi on matters related to science, technology and innovations. The council will be headed by K Vijay Raghavan, the principal scientific adviser to the Union Government. 
The council has been named as Prime Minister’s Science Technology and Innovation Advisory Committee (PM-STIAC). The panel will advise the Prime Minister on all matters related to science, technology and innovation and monitor the implementation of PM’s vision on the same.

1st SAARC Agri Cooperative Business Forum Begins In Kathmandu

The First South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Agri Cooperative Business Forum has begun in Kathmandu, Nepal. The theme of three-day Forum is the ‘Organizing and Strengthening Family Farmers’ Cooperatives to attain the Sustainable-Development-Goals-1 and 2 in South Asia’. 
It is being co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Asian Farmers’ Association with the support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

India And World Bank Sign 300 million dollar Loan Agreements

The Central government and the World Bank have signed 300 million dollar loan agreements for India Energy Efficiency Scale up Programme. They signed 220 million dollar Loan Agreement and an 80 million Guarantee Agreement for the Efficiency Scale-Up Program. 
The Program, to be implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), will help scale-up the deployment of energy saving measures in residential and public sectors, strengthen EESL’s institutional capacity, and enhance its access to commercial financing.

National Sports Day | Birth Anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand

National Sports Day: 29th August
The National Sports Day is celebrated on 29th August every year to mark the birthday of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. Over the years, the Rashtrapati Bhawan has hosted the Sports Awards function on this day. Dhyan Chand remains a constant source of inspiration for the hockey players of India. Often called a ‘The Wizard’ on the Hockey field, Dhyan Chand had such an aura that even Adolf Hitler offered him money to play for Germany. The man known for his extraordinary goal-scoring skills has won three Olympic gold medals (in 1928, 1932, and 1936) during the time Indian hockey was the most dominant. 
Early Life of Major Dhyan Chand:
Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, to a Rajput family in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. His original name was Dhyan Singh. His parents were Sharadha Singh and father Sameshwar Singh. His father was in the British Indian Army, and he played hockey in the army. 
Major Dhyan Chand- Hockey- Army Trivia:
Chand joined the Indian Army at the age of 16. It was in the Army where Dhyan Chand took up hockey. The Indian army gave him the platform and opportunity to play Hockey. He used to practice at night only in moonlight, as there were no floodlights in India then, his teammates named him ‘Chand’, meaning the moon.  
Between 1922 and 1926, Chand exclusively played army hockey tournaments and regimental games. He was selected for the Indian Army team which was to tour New Zealand in 1926. The team won 18 matches, drew 2 and lost only 1, receiving praise from all spectators. Returning to India, Chand was immediately promoted to Lance Naik. In 1925, an Inter-Provincial Tournament was held to select India’s national field hockey team. Chand got permission from the Army to play for the United Provinces team.
Major Dhyan Chand In Olympics: 

Dhyan Chand with his great performance in the inaugural nationals secured a place in the team for the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Dhyan Chand emerged as the hero of the 1928 Olympics by scoring 14 goals in five matches. Dhyan Chand was automatically selected to the Indian hockey team for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. He was made the captain of the Indian hockey team in 1934 and he led the team to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. This was India’s third successive gold in field hockey. He continued playing hockey till the late 1940s. He scored more than 400 goals in his career which spanned over 22 years.

Major after Retirement:
Chand retired from the army in 1956 aged 51, with the rank of Major. He taught at coaching camps at Mount Abu, Rajasthan. He accepted the position of Chief Hockey Coach at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala, a post he held for several years. He suffered from liver cancer and died in 1979 at the age of 74.
Special Awards and Achievements of Major Dhyan Chand:
1. The 20th National Award 2012, the Gem of India, awarded by the Union Minister of India, was given to Dhyan Chand.
2. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award, in 1956 for his contributions to the field of sports.
3. India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports is the Dhyan Chand Award. 
4. Chand’s autobiography “Goal!”, was published by Sport & Pastime, Madras in 1952.
National Sports Awards
National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports. The awardees receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29.
1. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four year. 
2. Arjuna Award is given for consistency outstanding performance for four years, Dronacharya Award for coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious International sports events.
3. Dhyan Chand Award for life time contribution to sports development.
Note: 
Apart from a medal and a citation, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs. 7.5 lakh. Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees will receive statuettes, certificates and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh each. This year with the Asian Games schedule overlapping, the government decided to move the function to September 25, 2018.

Asian Games 2018: Manjit Singh Wins Gold In 800m Race

India’s 28-year-old sprinter Manjit Singh won the gold medal in the men’s 800m event at the 2018 Asian Games, securing the ninth gold for the country. 
Another Indian sprinter Jinson Johnson, who is ranked first in Asia, won the silver at the event. Meanwhile, Dutee Chand secured herself a place in the women’s 200m finals, while Hima Das was disqualified.

Life of Major Dhyan Chand in Brief: 
The legendary hockey player was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He is widely considered as the greatest field hockey player of all time. He had started playing hockey only after joining the Army at the age of 16. He was famously known as ‘The Wizard’ for his superb ball control and had scored more than 1000 goals during his international career.

Satya S Tripathi Appointed Assistant Secretary-General & Head of New York Office of UNEP

Veteran Indian development economist Satya S Tripathi has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) by UN Chief Antonio Guterres. He will replace Elliott Harris. 
Tripathi has worked for the United Nations since 1998 in Europe, Asia and Africa on strategic assignments in sustainable development, human rights, democratic governance and legal affairs.

ISRO To Send 1st Indian Into Space By 2022

India’s first Indian human mission will be launched by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) by 2022. This was stated by the Union Minister of State (I/C) Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh. 
The programme will make India the fourth nation in the world to launch a Human Spaceflight Mission. So far, only the USA, Russia and China have launched human spaceflight missions. PM Modi had earlier announced `Gaganyaan — India’s maiden human spaceflight programme’. This is the most ambitious space programme undertaken by ISRO till date and is essential as it will give a big boost to the Science and Technology development within the country.

Tez Rebranded As Google Pay To Offer Instant Bank Loans

Alphabet Inc’s Google has partnered with four Indian banks to grant consumer loans online, as the fight for a $1 trillion digital finance market intensifies. The U.S. search giant has teamed with HDFC Bank Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. and Federal Bank Ltd. to offer instant, pre-approved loans to customers. 
California-based company re-branded its made-in-India Tez app as ‘Google Pay’ — the catch-all label for its payments services. Google has claimed that it has 2.2 crore monthly active users on Google Pay.

North Korea To Host Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships

The 2019 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships will be held in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, a signal that the secretive country may be coming in from the sporting cold. 
At the Asian Games weightlifting in Jakarta, which North Korea have dominated winning seven golds, the Asian Weightlifting Federation and North Korea’s Sports Minister Kim Il Guk signed an agreement for North Korea to hold the championships from October 27, 2019.
